Charles Hernandez, 87, of Beaumont, Texas passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 in Port Arthur. He was born July 16, 1924 to Maria deJesus Espinosa Hernandez and Bartolo Hernandez in Port Arthur, Texas. He joined the U. S. Navy shortly after graduating high school. Highlights of his military career include serving on the USS Mississippi during the Pacific Campaign of World War II, observing the signing of the peace treaty ending WW II in Tokyo Bay, and serving on the USS Saufley as part of the force blockading Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crises. He also served two (2) consecutive tours in Vietnam. Charles retired from the Naval Hospital Philadelphia in 1974 after 32 years of service. He was very proud of his military career and service to the nation. He returned to the Southeast Texas area and completed a second career with Mobile Oil in Beaumont. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leo Hernandez. He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa Hernandez of Beaumont, Texas, daughter, Elizabeth Mary Broussard and husband Stephen of Orlando, Florida, grandson, Ryan Broussard and wife Tonya, sister-in-law, Martha Hernandez, his niece, Rachel Hernandez, two nephews, David and Ruben Hernandez.
