It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Orland O. DeFrates, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this life on December 26, 2025, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born on May 5, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, Orland lived a life marked by service, love, and dedication to both his family and his community.

Orland proudly served in the Marine Corps, embodying the values of discipline and honor. He pursued higher education diligently, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Iowa. His ambition did not stop there; he aspired to further his education by pursuing a Master’s Degree at Texas A&M University, reflecting his lifelong commitment to personal development. He dedicated many years to his career in the Administration Department at the City of Port Arthur, where his commitment to public service made a lasting impact.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Orland was renowned for his remarkable skills as a carpenter. A true craftsman at heart, he had the ability to fix anything, showcasing both his ingenuity and practical knowledge. His hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing, reading, painting and gardening, activities that brought him joy, as well as treasured moments spent with his beloved family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alma DeFrates; his son, Troy DeFrates; his daughter, Michon DeFrates; and daughter-in-law, Hazel DeFrates. Orland took immense pride in his grandchildren: Seraphin DeFrates, Nathan DeFrates, and Andrew DeFrates, each of whom brought light to his life. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Debbie Cleland, Sandy Smith, and Cherrie Olson; his sister-in-law, Jing Mendoza; and his niece, Erika Mendoza.

Orland is preceded in death by his parents, Orland O. DeFrates, Sr. and Leona Mae Steward-DeFrates, as well as his son, Richard DeFrates. Their memories continue to live on through his family, who will carry forth his legacy of love and resilience.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 5, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM both at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home, located at 5200 West Parkway Street, Groves, Texas 77619.

Orland O. DeFrates, Jr. will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
